NCADA-BA uses volunteers throughout its programs. In fact, many of our services are provided by trained volunteer staff. Volunteers receive training to answer phones, describe our services to callers, make consultation appointments, receive clients and visitors to the office, and assist in our daily functions. They may also present education and training sessions for community members, other professionals, NCADA-BA staff and other volunteers, depending on their expertise.
Some of these volunteers choose to continue training to become NCADA-BA consultants. A consultant assists people who are concerned about their own or another's use of alcohol or other drugs by assessing and providing accurate information and referrals.
Other volunteers answer our Helpline, the only 24-hour alcoholism information line in San Francisco. The Helpline is a telephone service that operates from the offices of NCADA-BA during regular business hours and from volunteer's homes during the hours that NCADA-BA office is closed. Helpline volunteers provide telephone support for individuals who have concerns and questions about substance abuse, and they provide accurate, helpful information and referrals. Finally, volunteers assist people who are in crisis and provide information to callers such as meeting times and locations.
